Understanding Your Options
What Is a Freestanding Birth Center?
A freestanding birth center is a healthcare setting dedicated to pregnancy and birth care that is separate from a hospital. It is not a hospital, and it is not a home , it is a distinct environment built around a specific approach to maternity care.
Care at a birth center is generally designed around appropriate low-risk pregnancies, with midwives often playing a central role. The setting is intended to support comfort, movement, privacy, and family participation, while clinical assessment and eligibility remain an important part of responsible care.
Because birth centers are separate from hospitals, planning for the possibility of hospital transfer is part of how birth center care is intended to work, not an afterthought.
Birth center care is not the right fit for every pregnancy. Learn about birth center eligibility to understand how that conversation begins.
What defines birth center care
- A setting separate from a hospital, dedicated to pregnancy and birth
- Midwife-led care designed around physiologic birth
- Environments that support movement, privacy, and family presence
- Clinical assessment and ongoing monitoring throughout care
- Planning for hospital transfer when a higher level of care is needed
A More Personal Experience
Why Families Consider Birth Center Care
There is no single reason families explore birth center care, and birth center care is not a rejection of hospital care. It is a different experience, grounded in a particular philosophy of how pregnancy and birth can be supported.
Many families are drawn to birth center care because they want more time with the people caring for them. Longer appointments, continuity with a known care team, and clearer communication can make pregnancy feel less like a series of transactions and more like a relationship.
Others are looking for a setting that supports freedom of movement, position changes, and a calmer atmosphere, surroundings that feel less clinical without leaving professional care behind. Privacy, family participation, and support for physiologic birth are often part of what makes that appealing.
For some families, the appeal is informed decision-making: understanding options, asking questions, and taking an active part in care. None of this implies that hospitals cannot offer thoughtful care, many do. Birth center care is simply a different way of organizing the experience, built around a particular set of priorities.

The Birth Haven Approach
Care Built Around Relationship, Respect & Informed Choice
At the center of Birth Haven's approach is the idea that maternity care works best when families and providers actually know one another. That starts before labor, taking time to understand your history, your preferences, and your questions, not only your clinical details.
Appointments are meant to leave room for conversation. Clear communication, respect for your preferences, and individualized care are not extras; they are part of how shared decision-making is supposed to work. When clinical circumstances allow, Birth Haven supports the physiologic processes of labor and birth. When they change, care stays responsive.
How care is intended to feel is part of the conversation from the start, and any questions about continuity or who attends your birth are welcome to be discussed directly with the team.
About Birth HavenYour Birth Space
A Setting Designed for Comfort, Movement & Connection
The physical environment of a birth center is part of the care. Rather than a busy clinical ward, the space is intended to support privacy, rest, and the natural rhythm of labor. You have room to move, to change positions, and to be surrounded by the people who matter to you.
Comfort and a calm atmosphere are not decoration, they can genuinely support the process of birth. Family presence, quiet, and a setting that feels human all play a role. The best way to understand the space is to see it.

Water Birth
Interested in Laboring or Giving Birth in Water?
For some families, laboring or giving birth in water is an appealing option, a way to find comfort, privacy, and a calmer environment during labor. Birth Haven provides information for families exploring water birth so you can understand how it is approached here.
Water birth is not appropriate for everyone. Individual eligibility and clinical circumstances matter, and the decision is made through conversation with your care team.

Considering Vaginal Birth After Cesarean?
If you are exploring a vaginal birth after a previous cesarean, you deserve thoughtful, individualized answers. VBAC decisions are not one-size, your medical history, your current pregnancy, and how both progress all matter.
Eligibility for VBAC requires appropriate clinical review, and Birth Haven does not guarantee that VBAC is an option for any given family. What we offer is an open conversation about how VBAC is approached here and what the considerations are.

Physiologic Birth
Supporting the Physiology of Labor & Birth
Physiologic birth means supporting the body's own process of labor and birth with minimal unnecessary interference, while always remaining attentive to safety. Birth Haven's care philosophy can support that through movement, position changes, privacy, continuous support, time, and a range of comfort measures.
Supporting physiologic birth does not mean treating medical intervention as inherently negative. Intervention has an important and sometimes necessary role, and using it appropriately is part of good care. Care plans are individualized, supporting the natural process when it is safe to do so, and responding when clinical needs change.

Birth Center Eligibility Is Individual
Birth center care is generally designed for appropriate pregnancies, but eligibility is not a checklist applied the same way to everyone. It depends on individual assessment, your health history, and how your pregnancy progresses.
Risk factors can change during pregnancy, and plans can change with them. A pregnancy that seems suited to birth center care early on may shift, and a conversation with the Birth Haven team is the appropriate next step for understanding where you stand.
Specific age limits, BMI criteria, gestational limits, or medical exclusions belong in a real conversation with your care team rather than a general page.
Eligibility is a conversation
- Based on individual clinical assessment
- Reviewed throughout pregnancy, not only at the start
- Plans can change as circumstances change
- No guaranteed eligibility, discussed openly with the care team
Safety & Preparedness
Planning for Birth Includes Planning for Change
Responsible birth center care begins with appropriate screening and continues with ongoing assessment throughout pregnancy and labor. Clinical circumstances can change, and good care accounts for that possibility rather than assuming everything will go as planned.
Sometimes transfer to hospital care may be recommended, during pregnancy, during labor, or after birth. That is not a failure of birth center care; it is part of how birth center care is intended to work. Planning for transfer, communicating clearly, and maintaining continuity of care all matter.
Transfer rates, emergency response times, partner hospitals, ambulance response, hospital privileges, and outcomes are important questions to ask directly. What we can share is how safety and preparedness are approached.
